Artist Daniël Heynen enthusiastically took on the challenge of designing and creating a work of art for this special project at the EuropArtFair 2026. This large and powerful 6 x 2-meter canvas will be unveiled bit by bit through donations leading up to the fair and will only be fully visible on September 19 and 20 during the EuropArtFair 2026 at the MECC Maastricht.
Daniël Heynen describes his painting "Dawn" as follows:
With her eyes closed, a woman holds an eight-pointed star in her hands. A small point of light in a vast landscape. Around her, a world of swallows, dandelion fluff, rolling hills, and the first rays of a new day unfolds.
The star symbolizes hope. Not the grand gestures or the certainty that everything will turn out all right, but that small glimmer of light that keeps burning when the path ahead is unclear for a moment.
Behind her, the sun is rising. It’s the moment when night slowly gives way to the first light of day. Not because all her worries have vanished, but because there’s room again to look ahead.
The hills in the landscape serve as a reminder that no path is without obstacles. Everyone has experienced moments when life unexpectedly takes a different turn. Yet behind every hill lies a new horizon.
Swallows fly around her. They symbolize resilience, return, and finding your way again. They symbolize the confidence that, no matter how far you may drift, you can always find a place to land.
Her hair sways in the wind, connecting everything together. Dandelion fluff floats among the strands. Small and fragile, yet each with the potential to take root somewhere anew. They represent memories, hope, and the people who touch our lives along the way. For the small gestures that may seem unremarkable, but can make a world of difference at just the right moment.
"Dawn" isn't about cancer as a disease. It's about the person behind the story. About the strength that emerges when life is at its most vulnerable. About the people who stand by your side. About hope, connection, and the confidence that, no matter how dark the night may seem at times, a new day will always dawn.
Dawn is the moment when the light returns. Not because the night is over, but because you can see where you want to go again.
